ITEM 5

I engage students interest with every lesson

It is important to hook students at the start of a lesson and engage students to keep them motivated throughout the lesson. The techniques of using essential help spark the interest and curiosity along with focussing them on what's important in the lesson. (Dean et al., 2012) The other techniques that can be used to keep students engaged is "providing choices, in learning activities, framing lessons around mysteries or puzzles, and using novelty and variety in the classroom" (Goodwin & Hubbell, 2013, p. 196).

In this lesson, I used essential questions and different projects to engage my students.

Essential Questions

  • How can understanding finances help you set goals for your future?

  • What is the best way to have good spending habits?

  • How can understanding career opportunities, workforce and income help you make better choices for your future?

  • What factors determine your gross income?

  • What are categories that should be on a budget?

Activities

  • Picking a job and a place to live then basing a budget around those figures

  • Interactive quizzes and games

  • A project creating a budget and adding the various components such as wage and housing based on their researched information

interact meaningfully with every student

It is vital for teachers to get to know their students in order to tailor the lesson to each student's needs and interests. In taking the time to build relationships with students and taking the time to know them they understand that you have their interest at heart and want them to succeed, The students know that "teachers care about their problems and feelings" (Quaglia Institute 2011). This can be done by greeting each student as they come in, making time for interactions and learning names quickly are all methods that can help build and foster a relationship with students.

In my classroom, I plan on applying these methods by:

1.Creating opportunities for students to share their interest and talents

In the lesson I created the opportunity for this by having students find their ideal job and home, giving them an opportunity of sharing why they chose that job and let me know their interest.

2. Encourage students to make personal connections to classroom materials.

I let students chose to make their own personal budget for a goal they have in mind. This lets them see how the lesson can pertain to them and make it personal.

3. Just ask

I gave students the ability to talk about why they thought budgeting is important and what their ideas about it were. The open conversation let them talk about their interest while still building on the lesson.

ITEM 7

I use feedback to encourage effort

It is important for teachers to provide regular feedback to students to order to ensure they are successful. It is important to provide the correct feedback, it should be growth-oriented and noncontrolling. It is also important that students understand and want to reach their learning objectives.

In noncontrolling feedback, a teacher gives students feedback in a way they can perceive it as information rather than trying to coerce them into a behavior. In growth-oriented teachers look at ability in terms of motivation. In a study by Carol Dweck (2006), she noted that "students praised for their effort not only were willing to accept challenging tasks but actually enjoyed doing them"

In my classroom I can achieve this by:

  • Keeping feedback formative and nonevaluative

  • Giving feedback immediately

  • Making guidance specific to each student

ITEM 8

I create an oasis of safety and respect in my classroom

It is important to have concise rules and procedures in order for a classroom to function. The rules and procedures should be taught from the first day of school. Students need a solid foundation in order to be able to learn. " Teachers, aware of these needs and working with them in mind, can create an environment where students feel safe and are free to learn, explore, and create."( Thompson, N. E., & Wheeler, J. P. 2010). This can be done by framing rules that are not overly complicated, staying positive, involving students in establishing ground rules and letting them know the consequences. It is also important to encourage a positive classroom discourse in which students feel able to learn, secure and comfortable.
